smoke composites

i composited some of those smoke images and got these. easy. all you do is duplicate the image, flip or rotate the layer over the original, flatten, levels, done.

smoke

i've been up all night playing with some incense (fantasy garden black magic). my apartment's smelling a bit spicy, but man i'm happy with what i got. to do these i set up a 5-8 second exposure then, when the smoke looked good i flashed from the side with an old vivitar 2600-d.

traffic loops

so i've taken this longer exposure idea, shot some traffic and made a handful of animated loops. i showed them to a client and got an order big enough to keep me busy for a month. thanks t.

a couple of these were used in a promo video for the new Westin Hotel in Montreal (at 0:23).
(i shot them in Toronto.)

daytime long exposures

i love using longer exposures as a composition tool in daytime shots. they give the images an element of depth by adding a layer of movement to the scene (these are roughly 4-6 seconds). i really like the effect, you'll probably see more in the future..

building compositions

here's an idea. buildings are easy fun to shoot. if you go for a walk, just take your camera. and you can skip the fancypants architectural photography (at least this time out) and just look for buildings that compose with each other in interesting ways. these are in toronto (#1 and 2) and ottawa (#3 and 4).

cherry beach sundays

the cherry beach sunday parties are about wrapping up for the year. thanks, guys, for putting on another great summer. these shots are from the july 13th event.

light painting experiments

sometimes i get bored with my own stuff (not that there's even a lot of it yet) and i need to shake things up. so last weekend i was alone in the studio with, okay, plenty of work to do but sometimes you just need a break. so i grabbed a camera, turned out the lights and went looking for LEDs to shake it at. here's some of what i got.

these shots, i love.

..the ones that seem to come out of nowhere, pop themselves into your camera and basically make the whole set. i was in ottawa, shooting long exposure traffic stills for a video. when i got back to the studio, i looked through the photos and found this one (#3).

interests: photography

so now i have a blog. cool. i just started shooting for a stock company, mostly using a canon 20d with an EF-S 17-85mm lens. i have a camera, a contract and a lot of ideas. i'll keep you up on how the photography thing's going, maybe include a photo or three.

and i won't be boring you with a lot of technical photographyism. there are tons of places you can go for that and honestly, i'm just figuring it out as i go. but when i stumble onto ideas for cool photographs, i'll stick them up with some examples and tell you basically what i did. or maybe just show you photos.
